International Baccalaureate (IB) Studies

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is a two year assessed senior secondary program that is offered throughout the world.

QTAC Institutions can accept the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma as equivalent to an Australian Year 12 qualification. To facilitate comparisons for selection purposes, QTAC converts the IB Diploma score to a QTAC Selection Rank, similar to an ATAR.

IB Diploma results range between 24 and 45 and are mapped to an IB Admissions Score (IBAS) to allow IB Diploma students to be considered for tertiary places alongside their QCE counterparts.

This ATAR-like rank is known as the National ATAR because it is a national conversion which combines student data gathered from across all states in Australia. This means that IB students can apply in any Australian state or territory with confidence about how their results compare to their peers who have completed state-based programs and received an ATAR.

The Combined Rank

Results from the IB Diploma are reported on a numerical scale between 24 and 45. They are mapped to an IB Admissions Score (IBAS), which is used to obtain an ATAR-like rank, to allow IB Diploma students to be considered for tertiary places alongside their counterparts who have completed state curricula.

The ATAR-like rank is known as the Combined Rank because it is a national conversion which combines student data gathered from across all states in Australia. This means that IB students can apply in any Australian state or territory with confidence about how their results compare to their peers who have completed state curricula and received an ATAR.

For prior IB Graduates, your selection rank will be determined using the conversion table and schedule that was relevant for your graduation year.

Releasing your results to QTAC

In order for QTAC to receive your results, you will need to authorise the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) to release your results to QTAC. This is achieved via your IB Diploma Coordinator submitting a request to the IB on your behalf.

Students who fail to make this request will not have their IBAS calculated by QTAC and therefore will not be eligible to receive an offer via QTAC.

If you are no longer in contact with your IB Diploma Coordinator, you can request that your results be sent to QTAC directly from the IBO by following these instructions on the IBO.org website.

International Baccalaureate FAQs

Still have questions about IB?

Here are some of our most common questions concerning the International Baccalaureate.

How is the selection rank determined?

How is a Selection Rank Calculated?

The calculation of a selection rank begins with the ATAR, which is then adjusted according to specific criteria set by each institution. Adjustments, previously known as ‘bonus points,’ are added to the ATAR-based selection rank, not the ATAR itself. These adjustments can be based on various factors, such as:

  • Subject Performance: High achievement in particular subjects.

  • Equity Considerations: Disadvantages faced by the student.

  • Location: Regional or remote area adjustments.

  • Special Schemes: Institutional policies or special entry programs.

Each tertiary institution have unique rules and criteria for applying these adjustments, and they can be specific to certain courses.
