Delivered in our purpose-built campuses in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, our knowledgeable industry experts will be there to help you every step of the way, providing you with the real-world experience you need to graduate job ready. We’ve also partnered with the University of Canberra to offer modern degrees that will give you the adaptable thinking needed to make your mark in any industry. Available study areas include creative industries, digital design, dental prosthetics, nursing, and civil engineering.
Entry requirements
Applicants must have completed Year 12 or attained Year 12 leaving age to apply for the majority of TAFE Queensland courses through QTAC. Entry requirements for TAFE Queensland courses not offered through QTAC are available by contacting TAFE Queensland.

Most dental prosthetics, art, music, and performing arts diplomas, advanced diplomas and degrees require manual dexterity, portfolio, audition, or music demonstration submission for entry. These entry requirements are outlined in the course entries in this guide. The final date for applying and changing preferences is 12 December 2025 for Semester 1 2026 and 5 June 2026 for Semester 2 2026.

Admission Criteria

To be eligible for admission to a TAFE Queensland course, you must satisfy entry requirements. These requirements may include English language proficiency, subject prerequisites, and for some courses, course-specific entry requirements. For most TAFE Queensland courses, you will be selected if you have met English language proficiency, prerequisites (if applicable) and have completed Year 12 or attained Year 12 leaving age.

For some courses you will be selected on your ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) or selection rank. Course-specific information can be found on the TAFE Queensland website or in QTAC’s Course Search.

For TAFE Queensland Vocational Courses

For most TAFE Queensland vocational courses, you will be selected for entry if you have met English language proficiency, prerequisites (if applicable) and have completed Year 12 or attained Year 12 leaving age.

For courses where selection is based on ATAR or selection rank, please note the following:

  • If you have undertaken previous recognised higher education level study (e.g. AQF Bachelor degree level and higher) this study may be assigned a selection rank based on the level, duration and Grade Point Average (GPA) of the study.
  • If you have several selection ranks calculated (e.g. ranks based on year 12 results, VET study, higher education study, employment), you will generally be considered on the highest selection rank.
For TAFE Queensland Higher Education Courses

Applicants with higher education are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a higher education course, such as a university degree. This includes applicants who are currently studying a higher education course at another education provider and want to transfer to TAFE Queensland. It also includes applicants who have completed past study with university and non-university higher education providers.

Applicants with higher education can include students who have completed a bridging or enabling course delivered by, or on behalf of, a higher education provider.

Applicants must provide evidence of their higher education qualification (including partial completion) along with an Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS) statement or similar.

Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning

Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning are exemptions from study that enable you to fast track your way to a formal qualification by receiving recognition for the study you have completed or the skills you’ve gained from the workplace.

Credit transfer is a process that gives you credit for components of a qualification based on equivalent study that you’ve previously successfully completed.

Current and prospective students are eligible to apply for credit transfer when:

  • you have previously successfully completed the unit/s through TAFE Queensland or other registered training organisation or higher education provider
  • the unit/s for which you are applying for credit were not awarded by the previous registered training organisation or higher education provider through credit
  • you are applying for admission or currently enrolled in unit/s with TAFE Queensland for which you are applying for credit
  • the unit/s are embedded within the qualification in which you are applying for admission or enrolled. Where the relevant unit/s are electives within the qualification’s packaging rules, only the required number of electives for the qualification will be eligible for credit
  • for User Choice students, the completed units/s are relevant to the vocational outcome of the current qualification (leading to employment outcome/career progression).

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that provides you with an opportunity to receive credit for the formal and non-formal learning you have undertaken.

The RPL process takes into account all relevant skills, knowledge, and experience that you have. Through the assessment process you may be able to gain a complete qualification (vocational education and training students only) or, if you have gaps in your knowledge, parts of a qualification, which you can then complete with additional training.

There are limits to the amount of exemptions you can claim for qualifications. You will be advised of these limitations when you apply.

Contact TAFE Queensland for more information about credit transfer or recognition of prior learning.

TAFE Queensland recognises a number of bridging, enabling, preparation and foundation programs offered by higher education providers across Australia and overseas which may satisfy English language proficiency, subject prerequisites and other entry requirements. Contact TAFE Queensland for more information.

For TAFE Queensland vocational courses

For most TAFE Queensland courses, you will be selected for entry if you have met English language proficiency, prerequisites (if applicable) and have completed Year 12 or attained Year 12 leaving age.

For courses where selection is based on ATAR or selection rank, please note the following:

  • Competency-based and graded AQF certificate III and IV (if completed), AQF diploma, advanced diploma and sub-degree level study (based on level, duration, grade point average) will be assigned a selection rank.

If you have several selection ranks calculated (e.g. ranks based on year 12 results, VET study, higher education study, employment), you will generally be considered on the highest rank.

For TAFE Queensland higher education courses

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a VET course. This includes study at TAFE Queensland or other VET providers.

Applicants with VET study may have other qualifications and/or they may have work and life experience. Applicants must provide evidence of their VET qualification (including any partial completion).

For TAFE Queensland vocational courses

For most TAFE Queensland courses, you will be selected for entry if you have met English language proficiency, prerequisites (if applicable) and other course-specific entry requirements and have completed Year 12 or attained Year 12 leaving age.

For courses where selection is based on ATAR or selection rank, please note the following:

  • If you do not have formal qualifications you may use admission pathways such as employment experience and the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) (age restrictions may apply).
  • If you have several selection ranks calculated (e.g. ranks based on year 12 results, VET study, higher education study, employment), you will generally be considered on the highest rank.
For TAFE Queensland higher education courses

Applicants with work and life experience are those who left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e. who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then. Applicants in this category are selected according to eligibility and merit, vocational experience, previous study and personal attributes.

‘Experience’ includes a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education. This may include a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate academic suitability for higher education such as:

  • previous academic results
  • written submissions
  • portfolio presentation
  • professional experience
  • community involvement or work experience
For TAFE Queensland vocational courses

Current Queensland Year 12 ATAR-eligible students will be considered for an offer based on their ATAR (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school).

Current Queensland Year 12 students who are ineligible to receive an ATAR are encouraged to apply for those TAFE Queensland courses not currently requiring minimum ATAR scores. Students will also be considered for an offer based on other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school.

Current interstate Year 12 students will be assigned a selection rank based on their ATAR and will be considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school).

Current International Baccalaureate (IB) students will be assigned a selection rank based on the score from the completed IB Diploma. As agreed by admissions centres around Australia, the IB score is converted to a ‘combined rank’. The combined rank is on the same scale as the ATAR. This is then converted to a selection rank. For more information, visit International Baccalaureate (IB) studies. IB Diploma students will be considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school).

Results from home schooling, Accelerated Christian Education and other non-standard Year 12 programs (with SAT tests) may also be assigned a selection rank and considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school). Some exceptions may apply to courses with additional entry requirements (see below). Contact TAFE Queensland for more information.

For TAFE Queensland higher education courses

Applicants with secondary education are those whose admission is primarily based on the completion of Year 12 but also includes those who may have completed their senior secondary studies at TAFE Queensland or other VET provider. This includes applicants whose secondary education was undertaken interstate or overseas.

Prospective students must provide evidence stating completion of Year 12 in an Australian school system or overseas equivalent; or attained Year 12 leaving age.

Eligibility for entry will be based on:

  • your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) and/or
  • any additional course-specific criteria, such as English language proficiency, police checks, portfolios and auditions specified for your chosen course.
Applicants with Overseas Year 12 Study

TAFE Queensland will consider overseas Year 12 qualifications for admissions purposes. Contact TAFE Queensland for more information. If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

Other Qualifications Completed in Year 12

Other recognised qualifications completed when at school such as completed competency-based and graded AQF certificate III and IV (completed), diplomas, higher education study, and some creative arts qualifications (in the areas of music, dance, and speech) will also be assigned a selection rank.

You are also required to meet relevant subject prerequisites for the course you are applying for. This will be satisfied by successful completion of Senior secondary subjects (or equivalent). Any additional entry requirements must also be satisfied.

Privacy

Refer to TAFE Queensland’s privacy statement for more information.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

TAFE Queensland is committed to increasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in courses across all areas of study. Applicants who identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person may be admitted to a course based on their potential to succeed.

Applicants are considered on past experience in relation to study and employment, as well as potential to successfully complete their studies. Community involvement, past achievements or awards and current employment information are also considerations.

Applicants must also meet relevant subject prerequisites for the course they are applying for. Refer to the TAFE Queensland website for more information about student support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Inherent Requirements

TAFE Queensland’s inherent requirements are the fundamental skills, experience and knowledge that students must be able to demonstrate in order to achieve the learning outcomes of course in a particular study area.

For example, in order to be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as students and on graduation as practitioners, students must be able to fulfil the accreditation requirements of the professional associations for their industry.

If there are course-specific inherent requirements they will be listed in the course handbook or brochure. If you have a disability or chronic health condition, contact an AccessAbility Support Officer to talk about the practical assistance, support, and advice that may available to enable you to meet the requirements.

Credit transfer

Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning are exemptions from study that enable you to fast track your way to a formal qualification by receiving recognition for the study you have completed or the skills you’ve gained from the workplace.

Credit transfer is a process that gives you credit for components of a qualification based on equivalent study that you’ve previously successfully completed.

Current and prospective students are eligible to apply for credit transfer when:

  • you have previously successfully completed the unit/s through TAFE Queensland or another registered training organisation or higher education provider
