Course outline

Become an in-demand secondary teacher who makes a difference. In a supportive and collaborative learning environment, backed by world leading expertise, you will build your knowledge, resourcefulness, and creativity as a secondary teacher. Develop the practical skills to nurture and advocate for secondary school students with a disability or learning and behavioural difficulties. This course combines one discipline teaching area with special education giving you the ability to gain registration to teach in both secondary and special education settings. Expand your skills over time, from observing your mentor teacher, to co-teaching, through to planning for and teaching multiple classes a day. Other requirements

Students must complete mandated, supervised professional experience placements in educational contexts as continuous, full-time blocks to meet teacher accreditation requirements in Australia. Students must also undergo a criminal history check and obtain a Suitability Card as required by relevant jurisdictions before the first professional experience placement. For successful completion of all initial teacher education courses, students are required to demonstrate they have met mandatory approved benchmarks in both literacy and numeracy, evidenced through LANTITE (Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education). If you have not met the standard for either component after your first attempt, it is very important that you contact the Course Coordinator immediately to discuss your options.

Prerequisites

English, Literature, English and Literature Extension or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 and 4, C); General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 and 4, C)

To study a major or minor in mathematics – Mathematical Methods (Units 3 and 4, C).
