Course outline

Learn how to determine blood groups, identify malarial parasites and diagnose leukaemia and other human diseases through UniSQ’s Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science. Graduates are workplace-ready with skills in transfusion science, microbiology, haematology, histopathology and cytology, molecular diagnostics, and clinical biochemistry for a career as a medical laboratory scientist. Medical laboratory scientists perform analyses on blood and other body fluids and tissues to provide information that is vital in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human disease. This degree can be studied online or on-campus, and includes 80 days of hands-on clinical experience in a range of different pathology laboratories. Graduates are eligible to apply for membership to professional organisations including the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists, Australian Society for Microbiology, Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists and the Australian Society for Medical Research. External students must attend residential schools at the Toowoomba campus.

Other requirements

Students must satisfy the requirements of the University of Southern Queensland and Queensland Health for clinical placement. These include evidence of immunity to notifiable and contagious diseases, Queensland Health student checklist and placement, privacy and consent deeds, and a UniSQ Student Clinical Placement Policy Declaration. All students must complete 80 days of clinical experience in Australia.
