Course outline

This comprehensive six-year course covers the essential requirements of an Australian medical degree including anatomy and physiology, biological and social sciences, and clinical medicine. This course places special emphasis on tropical medicine and the health of rural and remote communities and Indigenous Australians. Students gain practical experience through a series of clinical placements, including in rural and remote areas. Townsville students must be prepared to take prescribed placements outside Townsville with about half of fifth- and sixth-year students relocated to clinical school sites such as Cairns and Mackay. Other requirements

Prior to taking professional placements, students must provide evidence of immunity to hepatitis B, MMR, varicellla, and pertussis, and current Provide First Aid and CPR certificates. A Suitability Card is required and an Australian Federal Police check may be required; refer to institution.

Domestic applicants: QTAC applications and JCU Online Application submissions close 30 September 2024. International applicants: QTAC applications and JCU Application Form submissions close 31 August 2024.

Additional entry requirements

Selection is based on a combination of online application, academic results and interview. In addition to applying through QTAC, applicants must submit a JCU Online Application. The JCU Online application portal is available from jcu.edu.au/academy/application-forms. Current domestic Year 12 applicants must request their school submit a Prediction of Academic Achievement form to JCU. This form is available from Application forms and Information for Domestic Applicants. Students will be invited for an interview based on their academic results and the evaluation of the JCU Online Application. Interview panels use specific criteria to assess applicants and identify attributes suited to a career in medicine. Interviews will be held in early December 2024 and early January 2025 via Zoom. This degree is primarily for Year 12 applicants. A limited number of places may be available for graduates or non-Year 12 applicants.
