Course outline

Bachelor of Music graduates are highly skilled, musically adaptable and equipped to enter professional life as a creative and flexible 21st century musician. Your educational experience will allow you to focus on the principal musical specialisation of your choice and can include exposure to diverse musical styles and professional engagement practices (artistry, education, production and leadership). You’ll also engage in collaborative and ensemble work appropriate to your field of study, music theory, critical listening, contemporary music-making practices, and develop awareness of musical contexts. You can choose from 4 majors and will have opportunities to gain credit for project studies and music industry engagement and internships, enabling you to gain experience and prepare for a smooth transition into professional life. A wide range of elective courses are available to deepen and broaden your musical experience. After successfully completing your undergraduate studies, you’ll be eligible to apply for a graduate entry teacher preparation program or transition to a fourth undergraduate or Honours year. Majors

Performance: prepares highly skilled, adaptable and creative musicians for the 21st century. Students will develop advanced skills in classical, contemporary or jazz performance.

Contemporary Creative Practices: explores a range of practices in contemporary music creation including composer, digital practitioner, songwriter, and/or sound artist

Production & Entrepreneurship: is for students who seek to envision, materialize and complete musical projects through collaborations between students from any discipline with a focus on the release of produced musical works connected with community and industry.

Community Education & Leadership: for students who are eager to engage their artistic skills and abilities to teach, facilitate, and lead participatory music-making in a variety of community and educational settings.

Other requirements

Important offer advice: Should you receive an offer into this program you will be required to enrol into classes* within a short timeframe. This information will be included in your Starting@Griffith email and expressed in the number of days from the day of issue of your email and is in line with the offer response date in your QTAC offer email. Please note that the number of days can vary depending on when the offer was made. This requirement applies irrespective of whether you accepted conditionally or unconditionally. If you do not enrol* into at least one class for your program by 5pm on the response day your offer will lapse. Lapsed offers are not automatically reinstated and reinstatement is subject to available places. *Enrolling into classes means that you are advising when you are attending class/es. Enrolment must be submitted.

Applicants must meet the minimum age requirements for admission, see the QTAC website for details.; Audition/ Folio (Folio is required for Composition and Creative Music Technology only)

Fixed closing date

Applicants must apply to QTAC, pay their audition fee and submit their phase one video recorded audition or Folio and Artistic Statement to Griffith University by 30 August 2024 to be guaranteed an audition in the first audition round. Applicants who wish to apply after this date may be considered in subsequent audition and offer rounds should places still be available. Late applicants should refer to the Auditions website for information.

Additional entry requirements

Admission to this program requires applicants to upload a portfolio of materials relevant to your artistic identity (eg. performances, compositions etc.) along with an Artistic Statement as the first phase of a two-phase process. Applicants progressing to Phase two will be required to attend an audition and interview. Visit the Griffith University website for details of audition requirements including how to pay for audition fees, submit your video recorded audition or Folio and Artistic Statement to the Queensland Conservatorium by 30 August 2024.

Applicants should also refer to the Auditions website for the most up to date advice and messaging. Phase two auditions will take place at the Queensland Conservatorium, Brisbane City (South Bank) from 23 to 27 September 2024. Griffith University will commence making offers on 15 November 2024, however additional auditions and offers may be considered in subsequent rounds should places still be available. Applicants must ensure they order their preferences accordingly; refer to the QTAC website. Applicants must nominate their current specialisation (eg. Instrument, genre, creative output etc.) on their QTAC application and pay the $50 non-refundable audition fee to Griffith University. You may audition on more than one specialisation as part of a single audition.

Applicants may audition as a Performer and/or Creative Practitioner in up to 2 of the following specialisations: Violin (classical, jazz), viola, cello, double bass, guitar (classical, jazz, contemporary), harp, flute (classical, jazz), oboe, clarinet (classical, jazz), bassoon, saxophone (classical, jazz), French horn, trumpet (classical, jazz), trombone (classical, jazz), tuba, cornets, horns, euphonium, piano (classical, jazz, pop), pipe organ, harpsichord, percussion, voice (classical, jazz, contemporary), bass (jazz, contemporary), drums (jazz, contemporary), laptop, non-Western (please specify); composer, songwriter, creative music technology.

NOTE: Griffith Guaranteed Admission Schemes do not apply to this program
