Course outline

This degree will prepare you to work as a paramedic in a range of traditional and non-traditional settings. You’ll be prepared to work with individuals, groups and communities in and out of the hospital setting to achieve positive outcomes for patients. You’ll gain clinical decision-making, problem-solving and critical thinking skills through simulated learning activities and clinical placements. You’ll also develop foundation knowledge in human body systems, general paramedic practice, management of a variety of conditions and situations including trauma, medical, mental health, maternity, and major incident management. Additionally, legal and ethical aspects of healthcare, future paramedic challenges and communication and interpersonal skills in paramedic practice are covered along with strong practical skills. Other requirements

Important offer advice: Should you receive an offer into this program you will be required to enrol into classes* within a short timeframe. This information will be included in your Starting@Griffith email and expressed in the number of days from the day of issue of your email and is in line with the offer response date in your QTAC offer email. Please note that the number of days can vary depending on when the offer was made. This requirement applies irrespective of whether you accepted conditionally or unconditionally. If you do not enrol* into at least one class for your program by 5pm on the response day your offer will lapse. Lapsed offers are not automatically reinstated and reinstatement is subject to available places.
*Enrolling into classes means that you are advising when you are attending class/es. Enrolment must be submitted. Students are required to undertake supervised clinical practice placements. Before they enrol, students must meet all professional practice requirements including a criminal history check, first aid certificate and CPR certificates, immunisation and health record, manual drivers’ licence (desirable), Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) medical assessment, and Working with Children (Blue Card) check. Prerequisites

One of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods (Units 3 and 4, C); Applicants must meet the minimum age requirements for admission, see the QTAC website for details.

Fixed closing date

New applications lodged after 9 December 2024 may not be assessed in time for the January offer round. Applications for this program close 30 December 2024, so applicants may add this program to their preferences until this date, however no guarantee is given that applications will be assessed in time for the January offer round. After 30 December 2024, no new applicants can apply, but existing applicants can reorder this preference. Late offers after the January offer round will only be made if places remain in the program.

Career opportunities

Following registration, as a paramedic, you will be able to apply ready for employment as a graduate level paramedic within Australia and a number of other countries. Other careers areas may also include the military, mining and other commercial paramedic opportunities.

Membership

Graduates will be eligible to become members of the Australasian College of Paramedicine and/or the Australasian College of Paramedic Practitioners.
