Eligibility

How do I know if I am eligible?

Eligibility refers to the minimum criteria required to apply for a course as set by the institution. Each institution sets its own admission criteria, which apply to every applicant for every course offered.

English Language Proficiency

English Language Proficiency is the minimal requirement considered for any courses available through QTAC. This means you will need to demonstrate your ability to speak, read, write and comprehend English at a level suitable for any courses you intend to study.

Course Quota

A course quota is the number of places available in a course.

Exclusion

If you have been previously excluded from an institution, this may affect your eligibility when applying for particular courses.

Minimum age requirements

In Australian tertiary course applications, meeting the institution’s age requirements is important.

Enabling programs and bridging studies

Enabling programs and bridging studies

Enabling programs and bridging studies provide opportunities for students to meet entry requirements for their desired courses. They also serve as pathways to advanced studies, preparing students for tertiary education by developing essential skills and knowledge.

Enabling programs

In an enabling program, you study multiple subjects for various purposes, such as:

  • Getting a selection rank
  • Meeting a subject prerequisite
  • Gaining general tertiary study skills (for example, assignment writing, researching, test-taking)
  • Gaining basic knowledge in a selected subject as a foundation for more in-depth study later on
On successful completion of some enabling programs, you may gain direct entry to selected undergraduate courses at the same institution. You can also use your enabling program from one institution to help you get into tertiary courses at another.

Many institutions offer enabling programs. Contact your chosen institution for a full list of theirs.

Bridging studies

Single-subject bridging units will not contribute towards a selection rank but may be used to:

  • Meet subject prerequisites
  • Gain tertiary study skills
  • Gain basic knowledge in a selected subject

Contact the relevant institution to find out which bridging studies they accept to meet subject prerequisites.

Professional Qualifications, Defence and Emergency Services

Professional Service Qualifications

Professional qualifications or time spent serving in the defence or emergency services may help with your application.

If you’re working in Professional, Defence, or Emergency Services, your professional qualifications may contribute to your selection rank for your application.

Minimum selection thresholds

Understanding Course Search terms

When you are browsing or researching on Course Search, you may notice terms like Selection Rank Profile, Student Profile and Minimum Selection Threshold.

The minimum selection threshold refers to the lowest adjusted score (rank) necessary to receive an offer for a place in a tertiary course. In the past, this was commonly known as the 'cut-off'.

When applying for tertiary education in Queensland, it’s important to understand the concept of minimum selection thresholds.

Thresholds represent the lowest ATAR or selection rank that was accepted into a course during a previous offer round.

These thresholds can change from year to year and even from one offer round to another.

The variation is influenced by the number and calibre of applicants for each course. So, while the minimum selection threshold can give you a close estimate of what’s required, it’s not a guaranteed benchmark.

The minimum selection threshold required for admission is based on the previous year’s Semester 1 intake period and can vary from year to year.
