Students develop the scientific, technical, and commercial skills needed to create innovative biotechnology products that improve health, agriculture, and the environment. They gain foundational knowledge in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics, along with core skills in regulatory, commercial, and intellectual property considerations that underpin biotechnology practice. At UQ, students learn from award winning educators and undertake extensive hands on laboratory training using state of the art research facilities. They explore biotechnology’s diverse applications, from antibody engineering and vaccine design to genetic plant engineering, tissue culture technologies, and biomaterials. Students may broaden their studies with engineering, mathematics, bioinformatics or innovation and entrepreneurship to understand the full pipeline from discovery to commercialisation. Industry placements or internships provide authentic workplace experience, enabling students to solve technical problems and assess commercial viability.
