Course outline

Prepare for a career as a clinical psychologist through advanced coursework, applied research and extensive professional placements. Develop advanced skills in psychological assessment, diagnosis, formulation, intervention and ethical clinical practice.

Complete more than 1,000 hours of supervised professional placements across Griffith University clinics and partner organisations, gaining experience working with diverse clients in individual and group settings. Build confidence managing caseloads and applying evidence-based approaches to support mental health and wellbeing.

Through advanced study and clinical projects, you’ll develop expertise in assessment, neuropsychology, research methods and therapeutic interventions. Learn from academics and practising psychologists while strengthening the professional judgement and skills required for clinical practice.

This degree is designed to support your eligibility for full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia and entry into the Registrar program for endorsement in clinical psychology. Completion also supports eligibility for associate membership of the Australian Psychological Society’s College of Clinical Psychologists. Other requirements

This postgraduate psychology program is highly competitive, with significantly more applicants than places available. The University offers a limited number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) and Domestic Fee Paying (DFP) places; however, only the CSP fee type is displayed. Refer to the Griffith program entry for fee information. All places offered will be full-time. The second year of the program may (with approval of the Program Director) be completed on a part-time basis.

Important offer advice: If you receive an offer, your place type will be detailed in your offer advice. You must accept your offer through QTAC and enrol in Griffith classes by the number of days specified in your QTAC offer email and Starting@Griffith email. Response timeframes vary depending on when the offer is made and apply whether your offer is accepted conditionally or unconditionally. Lapsed offers are not automatically reinstated and reinstatement is subject to available places. DFP offers may be converted to CSP should places become available during the offer process.

Additional entry requirements

To be eligible for this program you must meet the following criteria:

– Completed or be in the final year of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited four-year degree in Psychology or equivalent APAC-accredited four year sequence within the last 10 years, and with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 5.5 (on a 7.0 point scale) in the fourth-year courses and a minimum of class 2A Honours (scheduled for completion by COB 23 December 2026 in the year of completion);

– Hold, or be eligible for, provisional registration from the Psychology Board of Australia

– Attend a face-to-face interview.

In addition, you will need to demonstrate suitability to undertake the program by submitting the following items for consideration as part of your application:

– Two referee reports (one academic and one professional) to be submitted via the Heads of Psychology Australia (HPA) Psychology Referee Portal;

– Curriculum vitae;

– Personal Statement;

– Academic transcripts;

– Certification from Australian Psychological Society (APS) to verify equivalence of overseas qualifications (if applicable).

All documentation above, must be submitted by COB 30 September 2026, with the exception of final fourth-year results and English Language Proficiency test results which are required to be submitted by COB 23 December 2026.

English Language Proficiency requirements: This program is accredited and English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements have been set to ensure applicants meet both Griffith University language requirements and requirements for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.

Applicants invited to interview must declare how they meet ELP requirements for admission to the program via one of the following pathways:

– Successful completion of at least two years of secondary education and your entire tertiary studies in psychology taught and assessed solely in English from a recognised country*; OR

– Successful completion of at least six years (full time equivalent) education, including your tertiary qualifications in psychology, that were taught and assessed solely in English from a recognised country* prior to commencement. A maximum of two years break while obtaining your qualifications and advanced education will be accepted; OR

– Successful completion of at least ten years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country* and your entire tertiary qualifications in psychology taught and assessed in any country solely in English.

Applicants who do not meet ELP via one of the pathways above, will be required to complete an English Language Proficiency test and achieve the required scores outlined on – Master of Clinical Psychology at GU Language Requirements no later than 23 December 2026.

Applicants will be invited to interview based on both their academic merit and documentation provided. As this is a competitive program, not all applicants who meet the minimum academic requirements may be invited. You’ll be prepared for work in government organisations such as Queensland Health and in child and youth mental health services, education services, corrections, health psychology as well as non-government agencies, private hospitals and general practitioner practices. Training in clinical psychology prepares graduates for entering private practice.
